Nigeria: Commission Inaugurates Enforcement Task Force On Electricity Supply

Posted on : Saturday , 19th September 2015

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on Friday inaugurated an enforcement task team on electricity supply.

The Chairman of the Commission, Sam Amadi, said the inauguration of the task force on regulatory enforcement became necessary following recent improvement in available electricity to consumers.

Mr. Amadi attributed the improvement in electricity supply in the country in recent times to the efforts of the Commission to enforce industry regulations in the past.

"It is time to improve on our enforcement activities," Mr. Amadi told the 10-man task team on enforcement at the Commission's headquarters in Abuja.

"Enforcement should not be an event, but a process, which could entail complaints, investigation and monitoring."

The chairman advised members of the task team to give the assignment their best to enable the Commission achieve its mandate of delivering electricity to the people in a safe, adequate, reliable and affordable manner.

"Adequate regulatory enforcement will ultimately result in improved service delivery in the sector," Mr. Amadi said.

He asked the team to list out specific issues they would investigate, in addition to others that could be referred to them for investigation, compliance and monitoring.

The Head of Enforcement Unit and team leader, Chijioke Obi, acknowledged the importance of the assignment, promising that members of his team would not fail the Commission in the assignment.

Memberships of the team were drawn from across the divisions and departments of the Commission.
